A Walk to Preschool…The Ordinary Moments

Alice has been going to preschool for just over a year now and she loves it.  Her preschool isn’t too far from where we live, which means we are able to walk there and it quickly became one of my favourite times of the day.

Part of the walk includes a walkway and it is a place that when I have both girls, they can have a bit of freedom from holding my hand. They can walk together, there really is nothing I love more than watching my girls take each others hand and walk along together.

Then there are the times when I go to pick Alice up and I take Holly along in her trike. She loves a ride in it and for me it keeps one of them contained, making it a bit easier on the walk back. But even though Holly is in her trike, on the walk home, Alice will still walk by her side chatting away.

And sometimes it is just Alice and I, walking along having a chat, she really is the best company.

And other times she loves to run and jump all the way to the end…

But no matter what, the moment that I love most is on the way home and I can talk to her about what she has been doing, knowing that the minute we get inside the front door all thoughts of preschool will be gone. I soak up every last detail of what she has been doing whilst she wasn’t with me.

Sometimes its like banging your head against a brick wall trying to find out what she has been up to, but I have learnt a few tricks over the last year to get little snippets from her.

She has grown up so much over the last year and just looking back at this picture of her on her first day I can see just how much.

Tomorrow we find out which school Alice will be going to in September and whilst I am nervous and anxious about it. I am also sad that whichever school Alice will go to, we will no longer be able to walk to school and I will really miss it.

So, for now our ordinary moment of walking to preschool will become a special moment for the next few months. Moments that I will hold on to and cherish forever, because the clock is ticking and before I know it July will be here and that will be the end of Alice’s preschool walk.

I wish we could walk to school, I think some fresh air in the morning would benefit both my girls! I hope you get the school you want for Alice.

Aw I bet it is lovely having a nice walk with her and chatting about her day- we have to get in the car for both school and nursery which is a shame, I would love to be able to walk. Best of luck with your school choice tomorrow. We had so many problems with ours but it worked out for the best in the end. Everything happens for a reason. x

Good luck for tomorrow, we are in the same boat! I have only applied to schools we can walk to (luckily there are 4 within 15 minutes walk) because I really enjoy the walk to drop off/pick up (except when it’s raining!) and find it far less stressful than getting everyone in their car seats, fighting the traffic and then trying to park.

Thank you and to you. You are lucky to have that many schools near you that you can walk to x

I love the walk to school with my two. You are right though, there is only so long you can ask them about their day before it turns to nothing or I don’t remember!

Lovely post 🙂 Rosalie doesn’t go to preschool yet but hopefully when she does it will be somewhere within walking distance as we love our little walks together and I will miss that so much when she isn’t with me full time (sob!). Hope you get the school you want for Alice, it must be a nerve wracking wait xx
