Sunday was a pretty grey day outside, cold and wet…no snow for us! Holly was having a later nap than usual and I needed to pop to the shops. So, me and my big girl got wrapped up warm and headed out (leaving Holly with her daddy, not home alone!).
I got my shopping done fairly quickly and then I noticed the queue to get out of the retail park was long and not moving…I looked at Alice and thought it’s hardly ever just the two of us. So, I grabbed the opportunity to take my big girl to the cafe for hot chocolate and cake.
We choose our cakes, ordered our drinks and sat at a table for two…which felt so weird, as normally when we do this (and we do it a lot!), we have our little Holly with us. I sat opposite Alice and just watched her for a minute, quietly stirring her hot chocolate, and I thought to myself how have you got so grown up?
It took me back to when I was pregnant with Holly and most Fridays Alice and I would head to the cafe to get my pregnancy fix of hot chocolate and victoria sponge. Back then Alice would have a glass of milk and share a bit of my cake…now she wants to be like mummy with a hot chocolate and cake of her own. It was always ‘our thing’ and I loved it…
It was lovely to just sit and chat together, I just love being in her company. She makes me laugh, smile and of course sometimes want to tear my hair out…but I am lucky that generally Alice is a delight to be around.
I treasure the relationship we have and I hope that when she grows up, she will still want to go for hot chocolate and cake with her old mum…
